6 Tips to Help You Hire the Right Contractor For Your Home

Posted on December 30, 2022December 30, 2022 by admin

When you are planning for a home renovation, looking for the right contractor is the most important step in your planning process. You would want the best quality work for your home. Your priority should be to hire a contractor who can smoothly carry out the project so that you can focus on other things.

Besides making sure that they are licensed, here are some things to consider when selecting a contractor.

Get Multiple Estimates

Before you finalize your contractor, get written estimates from at least three contractors. Make sure that you compare their quality of work with the prices.

Have a close look at the building materials, schedule, and other factors when looking at each contractor. You need to be cautious of the estimates that are too high or too low as they may not be transparent about their costs.

Hire Local and Trustworthy Contractors

Whenever possible, you should hire a local and licensed contractor. Local contractors are easy to contact again if any problem arises during and after your renovation project. They are also more familiar with building codes in their area.

Make sure to visit their physical address and confirm their identity. When you visit them, you can ask about the materials and look at their portfolio. Make sure that they use good ready mix concrete for the plumbing system.

Check their Past Work

Make sure to check their past work and see if it aligns with the type of work that you need to get done. Visit their work personally and check the quality of materials that they use. Check if their foundation repair work is of good quality and uses the best methods.

You can ask their past customers about their service and inquire about their professional reputation. Go for a contractor who has at least five years of experience.

Take Your Time to Make a Decision

You can get multiple bids before you make a final decision. Avoid making an abrupt decision especially when it comes to signing a contract. Be aware when a contractor asks for a large sum of deposit upfront.

Make sure to read the contract thoroughly and get familiar with the terms and conditions. Signing away in a hurry can lead to problems later on.

Get Everything in Writing

Secure a comprehensive contract before the actual work begins. Make sure to get everything in writing and the contract should be clear as well. Hire a lawyer to read the contract terms for you before signing.

Normally a contract contains the following details.

  • A detailed description of the work and the price of each item.
  • Payment schedule which also includes balance upon completion of repairs.
  • Estimated start date and completion date.
  • Includes signatures from both parties. Avoid signing a contract that has blank sections.

Besides the contract, ensure that the contractor has obtained all building permits.

Anticipate Delays

During renovation work, delays happen all the time and it’s not always your contractor’s fault. Despite the timeline that you have in your contract, certain circumstances such as the weather can cause delays in the work.

You need to be patient and realistic and try to adjust your plans accordingly.
