It was hard growing up in a family like mine. Growing up poor, my teenage parents made it difficult for me to be interested in books. It was like traveling to a new place with new friends. There was not much to do in my area, so we had to go to the library. I couldn’t wait to read all the books in the library. At a young age, I could read at an extremely high level. One day I lay down in the one-bedroom home of seven family members. It was always noisy. I recall my teenage parents arguing one night about which side of my family to stay with. I was six years old. I didn’t care if I went anywhere as long as my books were there. To drown out the noise, I found a small pile of books under my bed that I could read.
As a child, I was intrigued by the way elementary school teachers could bring pictures to life. My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Moise, read four books on the first day of school. That was when I fell in love and was able to see another world. My fingers could not find enough books. My relationship with words was a complex but sometimes terrifying journey. Although I won numerous awards in elementary school for my creative writing, I never liked writing essays. My teachers were always impressed when I read aloud in class. It was insane that all my classmates hated reading aloud when I was in second grade. It’s not clear if it was for praise, as I didn’t get any positive attention growing up, or because it gave me hope.
When I reflect back on the class, my writing skills have improved significantly since I signed up for it and completed the Profile Essay. Although I struggled with writing, I found myself lacking self-confidence. I was grateful that I had two weeks to submit the final draft of my profile essay. This allowed me to edit and revise the paper. The profile essay is the one that I felt most learned from of all the essays. It was an emotional writing experience. My sister Daisy was interviewed about her struggles with alopecia. Because I wanted to give Daisy’s story justice and write a well-written essay, I worked hard. As a writer, I have made many improvements. My work over the last 8 weeks has shown me that I have made significant progress this semester. There were many things that I had to revise in my essays, and it often took twice as long to write and edit them. Writing, although not my second natural talent, became easier towards the end of the term and my writing skills have improved.
This semester, I learned many lessons. For example, I learned the dangers of overthinking while writing papers and the importance of not completing them until the end. Writing has become much easier. This book contains both my best and worst writings. It also shows me my weaknesses and the common mistakes I make in writing. These errors include overgeneralizing and writing about things without fully understanding them. I have learned many things that helped me improve my writing skills. Contrary to what I thought when the quarter started, I am now able to write better by creating general outline and drafting my essay. This allows me to avoid making unnecessary corrections in the final copy.
English113 was not a course I had in mind when I started college. This is because English 111 was not my favorite course in high school, despite my passion for creative writing. Although I knew the basics of essay writing when I began this course, I did not fully understand it. I was aware that essays have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Each section must have a thesis and supporting details and be written in paragraph format. My tutor gave me the task of writing a memoir essay. I had to write vivid descriptions, and I submitted my paper. They said that I seemed to be overdoing it. My page had to be edited several times. I’m always second-guessing myself when I write. Writing is difficult for me because I try to record everything without thinking about the organization or natural flow. Professor Flores helped me understand how to manage my time so that I don’t lose focus on the sentences or make my entire essay sound rushed.
In elementary and middle school, I didn’t know that a paragraph could contain only eight sentences, while an essay couldn’t exceed one thousand words. The word limit for an article was five hundred words. It didn’t matter how many sentences were in a paragraph. Teachers or assistants reviewed essays back then while students contributed a small amount to the task. The only thing that learners had to do was read and correct the mistakes identified by teachers. College allows us to read the comments and suggestions of our peers on essays. We can then agree or disagree with their opinions without affecting the essay content. This helps students to correct their errors and improve their articles while avoiding them in future work. Peer reviews improve essays and identify any errors that instructors make.
This involved holding a workshop and writing the initial draft. It was an improvement on items that were discussed during the workshop. Later, I would create the final copy. This was an improved version the initial draft. I was able to improve my essay-writing skills through this technique. I didn’t know there were many ways to write essays before this course. So, I was able to learn argumentative essays. These require students to research various topics, identify, create, and analyze evidence, and then take a position on the topic. Students must use logos, pathos and ethos techniques to analyze literature in rhetorical essays. Comparative essays require students to evaluate and explain multiple topics using different approaches.
While I enjoy creative writing, writing essays was not something that I enjoyed. Through this course, and the writing of several essays, I have a lot of experience. I gained much knowledge, improved my writing skills, and increased my vocabulary. Because of the wide variety of topics that I was exposed to, and my previous experiences, I became a better writer and thinker through essay writing. Through interaction with instructors and students, I have discovered many different ways to write essays. I have a broader perspective and my thinking has improved. Now I’m comfortable writing essays. I have realized that essay writing doesn’t always involve evaluating a single topic in a series of paragraphs and words. Writing essays is not just about writing well-structured sentences, but also using correct grammar and punctuations.
Specific skills in literature analysis have been acquired. I can identify the format of an article or text by using rhetorical and genre strategies. Also, I can tell if the author used logos, ethos and pathos when speaking to their audience. We discussed many topics and I was able to learn from authors, friends, and educators. This course taught me many other valuable lessons, such as how to stay organized and develop new ideas. Because essay writing allows me the freedom to express my thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics, Because I work hard each session, it is important that I have the ability to manage my own work. Due to the many assignments and works I did in this course, I wouldn’t have been able to meet every deadline. Because of this, I had to learn time management skills and stay organized throughout the course. English 113 was a crucial course for me. I learned how to be disciplined and time-conscious. These skills are essential for the course, but also for managing other areas of study throughout the semester. The knowledge and experience gained from this course will help me to have a secure future. I’m now a proficient writer and a creative thinker. I also have improved my vocabulary and grammar skills. These skills will make it easy for me to write resumes and letters that are useful when I’m looking for employment. Creative writing is something I am interested in continuing, so the skills learned in this course are essential. Apart from the writing skills and improvement, I feel more confident, self-regarding, and expressive. I have found this course to be both beneficial as a learner as well as an individual.
