What do we mean by ‘Tajweed’?
The Arabic word Tajweed is derived from the root word tajwada, which means to beautify or adorn. There are a number of rules that need to be followed when reciting the Quran, some of which you may have heard before such as not eating or drinking whilst reciting. Other rules include being mindful about what we do with our eyes, mouth and hands during this process.

- Breathe naturally and do not hold your breath at any point during recitation. – Practice reading aloud with a friend or family member who knows Arabic. This will give you feedback on what you’re doing wrong and what you’re doing right.
- Turn the pages without jerking them back and forth, and make sure that each page is always straight before turning it again.
Common mistakes while reading Quran:
In Arabic, the letter ‘sad’ has three different pronunciations. If it’s in the Online Shia Quran Academy e middle of a word, it’s pronounced as a ‘z’. If it comes at the end of a word, it’s pronounced as an ‘s’. And if it is part of the last letter in a word and followed by another word starting with an ‘s’, it’s pronounced like an English ‘z’ sound.

One way to start is by learning the five tajweed rules that govern recitation. This will help you to read correctly and beautifully.
- Tajweed rule 1: To pause and breathe after every sentence (a verse, sura, or an ayah) with two or more words, except at the end of a verse or when pausing would alter the meaning significantly. – Tajweed rule 2: To pause at the end of each sentence that is followed by one or more sentences in continuation (known as consecutive clauses).
- Tajweed rule 3: To pause at any point where two words are written as one word.
- Tajweed rule 4: To use short vowels unless they can be joined without affecting pronunciation.
