Metallica shirts have always been regarded as having some of the best artwork on tee shirts by any heavy metal band. In particular, the classic Metallica t-shirts from the eighties, where the graphics were often taken from the original album artwork, are highly regarded

Metallica are of course a heavy metal band from Los Angeles, who formed in 1981. Their early releases, which included extremely fast tempos and an aggressive music style led them to be known as one of the four big thrash metal groups around at that time, along with Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth. Then, with the 1986 release of Master of Puppets, Metallica became the most influential thrash metal band in the world.
As well as producing their best music in the eighties, Metallica’s albums from that time period also had the most interesting artwork. Below are my favorite 3 Metallica shirts from that era, which in my opinion still remain the best Metallica t-shirts out there today.
Master of Puppets
This was one of the best ever heavy metal albums, with a number of hits including “Master of Puppets” and “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”. It is generally considered to be the band’s greatest ever achievement.

The artwork for the Master of Puppets album forms the basis of the tee shirt. The design shows the Metallica logo connected by puppet wire to rows upon rows of headstones in a cemetery.
Metal Up Your A**
The name for this tee shirt is certainly to the point, if you pardon the pun. The name comes from a demo recording the band did on November 29, 1982, at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. The name and album cover artwork were to be used as the band’s first album name and sleeve. However, it was considered inappropriate at the time and Metallica’s record company insisted that the group changed the name and so it eventually became “Kill ‘Em All” instead.
The front of these Metallica shirts have a hand holding a dagger coming out of a white WC. Meanwhile, the reverse side shows a partially clothed skeleton getting fried on an electric chair.
Ride The Lightning
These Metallica t shirts are my personal favorites and they feature artwork from the band’s second studio album, of the same name. The front of the tee shirt features forks of lightning coming down from the Metallica logo onto a wooden chair, while the reverse side again shows a skeleton in an electric chair.
